There's no better way to get out of the heat of the house on a hot summer afternoon than to go sit on the front porch with a cool drink and a breeze.

Honey bees are no different. They also know that when the hive gets too hot, they can find relief on the porch. Honey bees will leave the hive and gather on the front and under the landing board in what resembles a beard. Some clusters reach epic proportions while some look more like a five o'clock shadow, but they all serve the same purpose: to cool the hive.

Reducing the number of bees in the hive reduces the heat generated, but some of those bees sit all around the entrance fanning their wings. This fanning creates a breeze, a actively cooling the hive.

Who knew nature's architects knew HVAC too?
